Obama the Affirmative Action Candidate and Dumbed Down Americans

On January 23 of this year, I wrote a blog questioning whether or not Obama could be the AA candidate (see http://thoughts.com and type Gospel of the New Truth in search bar). After recently reading several news articles and hearing what various political experts on TV shows have said, I believe that there is no question that Obama is the Affirmative Action candidate.

A number of facts seem to point in that direction. In no particular order of importance, a top McCain campaign maven stated that if Obama were the Democrat nominee, he would have to quit the campaign because he knew Obama and couldn't say anything nasty about him (now that's a "change" for a Republican political worker).

And the other question is, if much of the support is because of the Clintons' supposed (imagined) denigration of a symbolic black leader, as well as a form of "redemption" for white voters, how will it be possible for anyone to attack Obama for his screw-ups as President - which are bound to happen - if doing so will cause an outcry of "racism" - since that also is bound to happen?

Columnists, including David Broder, have either indicated or directly stated that the print media has been very tolerant of Obama, while that was not the case for Clinton - a fact any vaguely intelligent person could discern. Case in point? The Kennedy's endosement of Obama, and the resulting large victory for Clinton in Massachusetts, yet that very important result was brushed off by most of the media, including guys like Chris Matthews and Keth Olbermann.

Shelby Steele, author of: WHY WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT OBAMA AND WHY HE CAN'T WIN, states, in so many words, that the election of Obama to the Presidency would be detrimental to those Black leaders whose power lies in the confrontation with whites over their "keeping the black man down" theory. After all, if Obama does end up victorious, what happens to that argument?

Even those who understand that Obama is more style than substance say they will stay with him. It has been observed that amongst his white supporters, there is the underlying feeling that doing so will help them rid themselves of "guilt feelings"(?!)

All of which points out that unity message Obama preaches is nonsense - it is only way to attract those who do not. nor want to, think, but who only react to a candidate's 'star quality'. Which, by the way, is OK, if all other important factors are considered, such as past history of achievement, specific plans for the future, and so forth, none of which anyone has actually heard from the candidate. But reacting to Obama as a messenger of the good life, a maker of change for change's sake,is just another proof of the dumbing down effect of the modern era.

The Modern Dark Ages

Recent newspaper and magazine stories, as well as those heard on radio and television, bemoan the fact that people don't read much anymore. Newspaper circulation is down, and the same is probably true of book sales. What I see, which lends credulity to these facts, is that, from personal observation it appears that more DVDs, CDs, and video movies are borrowed from libraries than books. About the only group I have seen on my regular forays to my local library borrowing books are the parents of very young  pre-school children - a happy sight, but unfortunately, apparently, an effort which does not have long stability when it comes to reading.

One of the problems may be public schools. Too much required reading is of books which are "too boring", books like "The Red Badge of Courage". Heck, I always enjoyed reading, but the forced reading of books such as that one didn't make me very happy, especially since a book report was required, and if you didn't write what the teacher wanted, woe unto you.

Today there are too many distractions, and apparently there's an assumption that reading really isn't that important. After all, we have all those ten-second sound bites, headline runners, and quick synopses, both on tv and online. Add to that opinions from television pundits and the pundit wannabe, well who has time to read, anyway?

So what has happened is that we're in the "dark ages" of learning and thinking. How can one make a reasonable decision about any topic if he or she doesn't read.  About the only thing that seems to matter these days is celebrity. If a celebrity candidate tells us something, the unlearned amongst us accept what is said as gospel. When a celebrity tells us what books to read, a hundred thousand people run out to buy the book - whether they even read it is beside the point - and if they do read it, are they able to make an independent opinion as to the worthiness of the book's contents?

Gaining knowledge, becoming informed, requires reading as well as listening. Reading not only what is today's writing, but what has been written in the past. I think most people would be amazed that the  arguments given several thousand years ago re: politics or warfare, for example, are pretty much the same as those made today. The old saying "nothing new under the sun" is true, but sadly, too many people believe that what they hear is new truth, and then wonder why, after giving their all to what they are made to believe, it's just the same old old all over again.

This country would be much better off if people had the ambition to learn, to do good work - not just to know enough to get along, and hope that those who lead hopefully make the correct decisions. We may appear to be smarter than our 12th century ancestors, but how do the unread really know?

Beware the Pied Piper

Whle I was in one of our local super boxstores today, a young girl - probably a college student, was asking people who they would rather see as the Democrat Party nominee - Clinton or Obama. My answer was thus:

Obama has perpetuated the biggest con the public has ever seen. What enables voters to fall for his scam is that people are more interested in sound bites and instant gratification. Most folk have no interest in spending more than a minute or so examining facts, thinkng, and making independent decisions. Add the fact that most college students aren't learning anything of real practical value - real life, that is - it's very easy to clamor for a politician, and that's what Obama is - who promises nirvana.

The kid looked at me for a minte or so, obviously trying to think, then finally stated "..but he's a unifier."

No wonder I believe we may all be screwed in the end.

It's the Movement, Stupid!

I was just watching the Chris Matthews show segment on the political campaign. When the discussion got around to the Democrats, one of his guests (a radio show host from Philadlelphia) said it's not the man (Obama), it's the movement for change. So hurry up everybody, and join the movement of lemmings - right over the clif!

Just another example of damn the facts and realties - full speed ahead....
